Farmington residents voiced significant concerns about the town’s growing debt at a recent council meeting, driven primarily by substantial projects such as the new Farmington High School and extensive renovations at the town hall. Tim Kelly, a resident, highlighted that Farmington’s annual debt service payments are projected to exceed neighboring towns, including larger municipalities like Glastonbury. Kelly noted that Farmington’s debt payments would surpass nearby communities’ combined debt service.
🚧 Significant projects contributing to this debt include a $1 million HVAC overhaul at the Farmington Highway Garage and a $2.65 million renovation of the community center’s HVAC system and roof.
“You’re not going to like the 3.5% either,” said Town Manager Kathleen Blonski, explaining that even slightly exceeding the original budget target would mean considerable trade-offs, such as potential service reductions, delayed infrastructure maintenance, or even staffing cuts. Residents could face higher taxes or noticeable reductions in town services, highlighting the challenging balance the council faces between fiscal responsibility and maintaining service quality.
The meeting also featured humorous banter, particularly from Russ Arnold (Director of Public Works), regarding equipment needs, providing moments of levity during the serious budget discussions.
